So, 16 Juli 2006 04:43

It's that time of the month again, and I can't bring myself to come up with
an amusing birthday greetings now. I think I'm justified, though.

I've had the *thing* on my neck for years. Some sort of - well, I won't go
into graphic details. Just a few weeks ago, it had gotten to the state where
my girlfriend told me I was going to the emergency hospital *NOW*. So we
did. The doctors examined it, sent me to get a CTscan and came to the
conclusion that letting this one drain and heal on its own won't be enough -
it's somehow connected to my bronchial tubes and it will require surgery to
tie it off. I figure in about a week or so I'll go under the knife. I won't
mind telling you I'm a bit nervous. This sort of thing isn't common, and
hopefully the doc will know what he's doing. Theoretically I'll be in the
hospital overnight at the most.

So - no ferrets with cannons this time. I do want to wish happy birthdays to
J M Doyle, Anitra L. Freeman, Chris Carter, Deena Mobbs, Piers Forrest,
Rhiannon, Carol Hague, Frank Reedy, Jamie Crowther, Katie Sims, Joe "Muse"
Musielak, Tim Hunt, Rocky Frisco, Theo Asma, Steve Rogers, Sylvain Chambon,
Mike Putnam, Maurice Barnes, Tim Mueller, Thorin, Martin O'Nions and anyone
else from the second half of July that we're forgetting. With a little good
fortune, we'll be back in regular service in two weeks.

Murphy: Actually that's only part of the story. Paul's also being lazy.

The anticipation is often worse than the experience. Very best wishes
for successful surgery and a comfortable recovery.

I always light 2 candles in church after the service - one for family
and one for friends. I am more than happy for you to piggy back the
friend's candle - and take all the good wishes and prayers you need!

Best wishes to you. Yes, the surgeons really do know what they're doing, so
everything will be fine. Just think of the crazy, anaesthetic induced dreams
you can have of the cannon crew while you're there. Should stock you up for
the next year.

(not, admittedly, a serious one[1]) and while it's nerve-
racking, they honestly do know what they're doing.

[1] I know what it's like being in hospital *for* a serious
operation, but at the last minute they told me it wasn't what
they thought it was and I should take antibiotics and watch my
diet instead...

Good wishes you have in abundance. It seems likely that the surgeon will
know what (s)he's doing - they don't usually get turned loose until they're
really competent. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Being needle-phobic I was really stressed when they had to take off a
polyp ( or some other sort of minor growth ) on my back. It turned out
to be no big deal and I hope your op ends up the same way. ( BTW, the
biopsy on mine came back clear. )

I went in to the hospital yesterday morning for the operation. I was
understandably nervous (read: "Scared") and wanted to bolt and run. I *hate*
needles, for one thing. I do not remember a thing between Pre-Op and
Post-Op; ie, I don't recall being wheeled into the operation room. My throat
wasn't too sore, nor was I in very much pain. I had a late lunch with no
problems. In all, it went a lot easier than I anticipated.

The worst thing about it was that they kept the IV needle in the back of my
hand until I checked out this morning. Word of warning: You do NOT want to
bang the back of your hand against the wall when you've got one of those
needles in it, no matter how well anchored it is by tape.

I talked to the doc this morning before I checked out. They cleaned out as
much of the bronchial tract that was connected with the external abscess as
they could. I've got stitches now, so I can't move my neck much, and
there'll be a follow-up visit.

In short - I'm alive. Maybe, eventually, this will be an end to it.

Glad to hear it went OK.

You're right about the needles. I'm usually in for a few weeks after an
Op and they keep the needle in quite a while to replace fluids. Hence the
fact that I drink like a fish for several days to get rid of it faster :)
